We Wear Short Shorts

I love finding pretty new things to look at. And funny things. And that is why I love it when blogs I like list their favorite blogs that they like, because chances are, I will like them too. So I was looking at Habitually Chic when I wandered on over to A Lovely Being. Both are truly lovely websites. A Lovely Being recently featured the Greenbriar Resort, where they have rooms decorated like this:

Vindication! Rebecca recently did a post that featured that type of mirror -AND- she just chose that paint color for my bedroom ceiling and for my closet. Love it! (update- if you read yesterday's post, you'll see that Rebecca bought a similar mirror for her entryway. Love it!)
Anyway, over on the website, there was a post about French pop star Yelle's video, Comme Un Enfant. She describes the video as "pink," and "catchy," and she describes Yelle as "Audrey Hepburn meets Lady Gaga." Well, of course I had to check that out. My favorite thing about the video are a pair of shorts the singer wears. They are high-waisted, short, black, retro yet modern, and I love them.

If I had legs like that, I would definitely be getting a pair of those shorts. And they seem to be cropping up all over. I found another pair on the blog Anna del Russo.

I have a pair of high-waisted denim shorts that I practically lived in last summer, so I am glad to see that this trend is not over just yet. Not everyone can pull of super short shorts, but high-waisted styles tend to be universally flattering. You don't have to go super short, but you can wear them shorter because the high waist balances them out.
I won't be going super short when I sport this look, but I will definitely be wearing some of these high-waisted lovelies when it warms up enough. Which I'm starting to think is never going to happen, the way these little winter storms keep blowing in. There's supposedly a chance we'll get snow. That's the word on the street, anyway. So later, when it is warm enough that I won't spend the whole day cursing the cold, I will be pairing my high waisted shorts with all kinds of tops, many of which I am sure are still at the stores, just waiting for me to purchase them and take them home to my ever expanding closet.

I Got It!

You may recall in my "Ghost and Mrs. Muir" House post (view here) that I showed you a similar style Federal mirror. I have had my eye on this one since Christmas but I thought it had sold. Lori and I went back last weekend and guess what Lori found? Yup, in a totally different area of the store and on our second time around, there it was. Also, it was HALF the price! It was just meant to be.

Here it is in my unfinished entryway. I can't wait to see the walls completed (there will be tongue-and-groove boards on all walls). For now though, I am happy when I pass this fantastic mirror. It just makes me smile. Thanks for looking down, Lori!

Cosmopolitan Hotel closet-

I did a post recently on the Cosmpolitan hotel in Vegas (because I love the commercial and song!), which led me to do a search on the hotel itself, to see what decor they went with. One of the images was of a closet. What kind of hotel showcases an empty closet?! It might not make much sense, unless you look at the back of the closet, which is covered in Fornasetti wallpaper. What a cool touch! In the spirit of that closet, here are some more amazing wallpapers by Fornasetti. Wallpaper was so big in the eighties, and then went out, and was having a moment again. No matter what, it is a big commitment. A wall in a closet is perfect for what can truly be seen as unique art.

Sneak Peek: Planning Gwenna's 4th Birthday Party

Last year I gave my little Gwenna a vintage "Strawberry Shortcake" birthday party; you can view that post here.

I just wanted to give you a little peek at what I am working on for her 4th birthday party in June. It is to be "Alice in Wonderland" themed this year.

My mom and I made this birthday banner. It is made from felt, with vintage "Strawberry Shortcake" fabric on top, then chip board letters covered in scrap book paper. Easy, but supper cute. I intend to make this for her "Alice in wonderland" party too.

This vintage fabric is the perfect starting point.

I am having a special dress made for Gwenna now and I don't want to spoil the surprise by posting it, but I will say that it and the above fabric are the main inspirations for everything else. It will be a sweet combination of the Disney cartoon and the original Lewis Carroll images. I have noticed from other "Alice in Wonderland" parties that it is typical to use colors that are crazy and bright. I prefer more muted shades. Also, there are just so many characters in "Alice" that the options are endless. I really like the white rabbit, and since Easter is just around the corner, I am hoping to score lots of rabbit decor. I am going to try to stick to blue, yellow, pink and white so that the overall affect is striking...you will just have to stay tuned to see if I am successful.

I am so grateful that I have my mom and Lori's help planning this party. I really enjoy planning parties for my kids because they just grow up too fast and I want to look back at these beautiful celebrations. Nothing extravagant, just lots of thoughtful little details...and maybe even a recitation of "The Jabberwocky" by the birthday girl. But I shouldn't get my hopes up there!

Sorry about my linty mirror! Anyway, I had to show you my new summer outfit, since it will be months until I get to actually wear it.

I am loving this new anchor top with the button detail and peter pan collar! Also, the black shorts have the nautical button detail. Did you notice the necklace? It is the very one I posted a few days ago. My loving husband got it for me for Valentine's day, and I couldn't have been happier.

I think the black and cream ballet flats keep the outfit sweet and classic, since the shorts are quite short.

I think Lori and I are going to have to do a whole section on our blog entitled "Vindicated"

I opened this months House Beautiful and what did I see? A beautiful little girl's room done in green that reminds me of The Secret Garden. It is very English and you may remember that Mary (from the book) is from India, which leads me to the topic of this post, the elephant....

It is so much fun to see something that I chose for this little girl's room months ago, appear in a high-end home decor magazine! I am sure my version was much cheaper too. I knew it was chic when I saw it, but it really makes me feel like my taste has been justified; it isn't necessary, but sure is nice.

Schumacher pillows and fabric

Etsy is a great source for a lot of things. I am hoping that it will provide us with the fabric I need for the pillows for my bedroom. Rebecca found some gorgeous fabric that would be perfect for a couple of European shams.

Isn't that beautiful?! There are a couple of problems with it, though. For one thing, it is Schumacher, a brand that is only available to licensed designers. Second, it costs something like $150 a yard. Whew! That's a lot of money for a little fabric. But. A yard would be about enough to make the shams, and since that would be the focal point of the bed, it would almost be worth the splurge, if I could get the coverlet cheap enough. So Rebecca and I will be trolling the internet, and sites like ebay and etsy to see if (fingers crossed!) someone puts some of this fabric up for sale. Heavily discounted. In the meantime, I am loving these pillows that are available on etsy. They are all Schumacher fabric, or at least they are the items that came up when I searched for Schumacher. I don't think I can use any of them, but maybe you can.

The French are masters of the "imperfectly perfect" look.

Turtletastic!

Last year, my best friend's boyfriend, Jared Blake, was on the NBC show The Voice. While he was on the show, we made a ninja turtle video after someone on twitter accused him of trying to look like the 5th ninja turtle. Antics ensued. Water bottles were made. A legend (granted, in our minds only) was born.

Cut to months later, when it is time for my daughter to pick out Valentines- she wants Ninja Turtle ones, with ninja pops to accompany them. So there you have it. I think they turned out pretty turtletastic. And once we got the hang of them, they were pretty fun to make.

Hope your Valentine's Day is totally tubular (that's ninja turtle speak for awesome).

Weekend Hall Closet Make-Over

I had the urge to organize my hall closet this weekend but as I started pulling things out I realized that it needed some cheering up. I had a gallon of turquoise paint that I never used, so I pulled it out and painted the inside of the closet. I like the little surprise of color in a small space.

I got my husband to add some hooks to the side wall of the closet for my extra purses. We have a small closet in our master, so there is just not enough room to put all my things.

I also love the addition of some art in the closet. So fun!

I would call this a productive weekend!

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and I feel like really going all out this year. For me, that will mean throwing my students a Valentine's Day party. (Which might be construed as kind of sad, I guess. Better not dwell on that one!) While I might have grandiose ideas in my head, the end result will probably be pretty calm. Last year I opted to make my own cards for the kids. I got plain white index cards from the office, glued on hearts I cut out from an old book, and then added heart pencils to holes punched into the cards. I wrote messages like, "You've got the WRITE stuff, Valentine!" I didn't feel too bad about the obvious cheesiness of those kinds of sentiments, because Valentine's Day is pretty cheesy, no?

I have already cut out my paper hearts for this year (one of my class library books recently went kaput, so I decided to upcycle it). I think I may hole punch the hearts and add them to red and white barber pole style straws.

I plan on making that punch that uses raspberry sherbet and lemon lime soda, and I am going to serve it in clear plastic cups with those straws. How cute is that?! In my head, it is super cute.
I think that is what I will use my paper hearts for this year, and that way I can give my kids different Valentines. I am loving the idea of vintage cards, like these:

My brother and sister-in-law made us mustache pops for Christmas a while back, and they were a huge hit with the kids and the adults. I know this is an older trend, but it is still a fun one!

Spring time makes me think of these adorable books I had as a child called "Herself the Elf." I also had one of the figures and a record of the stories too. The illustrations are pretty and pastel and the books have little pop- up flaps with pictures underneath. My daughter loves these because she can lift them up as I read.
The books were published by the Hallmark brand, like "Strawberry Shortcake," but they were not as popular. I really wish they would be brought back.

The images are so delicate and pretty.

The Hunger Games

Want to know the bad thing about recording all your favorite shows, watching them later, and fast forwarding through commercials? Sometimes you miss out on things. Like this:

The Hunger Games official movie trailer. I hadn't seen this until now. If you haven't read these books yet, you really should. Go. Now. Get them. Devour them. I waited for awhile to read them, but finally caved because almost all of my former students who would drop by for a visit and a chat insisted that I read them. I remember getting the first one out of my trunk where it had been for months, starting it, not putting it down until it was done (luckily we were at the beach, so I could do this!), and then going to the store to get the second and third books. They are that good. Especially the first two. I'm really looking forward to the movie. I love Donald Sutherland, ever since he was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I love that he is in the movie! March will be here before you know it, but you still have plenty of time to go get these books and get them read! You won't be disappointed!

The Legendary Bunny Williams

A few traditional pieces, a few exquisite details, throw in a couple quirky elements and there you have it.

When I look at a room decorated by Bunny Williams, I see a space that is complex; it is layered and purposeful, but never overdone. There seems to be an overriding traditional style, sometimes it is even very formal but the genius comes in how she is able to sprinkle in "odd" or unique pieces to add playfulness and livability. Something else that I have noticed is her play on the unexpected mix of decor we are used to, for example: the photo below is of an outdoor garden patio. We usual think of the patio as a casual spot to entertain, but look what she did! She turned it into a formal space which makes it ironic and fun. The same goes for the bathroom below. The artwork and chandelier look as though they belong in a formal living or dining room, but are just as beautiful and appreciated in the bathroom.

How is it possible to create a room of formal, traditional elements that still feels so homey?

Just look at this living room. At first glance it looks formal and traditional, but notice how the furniture is placed. Books are stacked, occasional tables are numerous and there is a sense of ease and "kick your feet up" warmth.

Stuffy? No. Rich? Absolutely
Look at this mix: Library/ intimate breakfast table. After all, most of us don't live in homes with rooms that designate use. We do many things in the same room.

Comfortable, traditional, unique.

Antique mirrors flank the sofa and reflect the jaw-dropping room.

How do such complex spaces seem so harmonious and natural? Well, my hope is that if I look at these pictures long enough, Bunny Williams talent will rub off on me....I can dream can't I?

Just the Right Amount of Wrong

I love this commercial. It is quirky, and I love the song, which is by Parov Stelar and is electroswing. It makes me want to go stay in this hotel and have some weird little adventure.

The hotel is the Cosmopolitan in Vegas, and the commercial sets it up as having "Just the right amount of wrong."
The song samples Lil Harden Armstrong and Her Swing Orchestra's song, "Oriental Swing." Lil Harden Armstrong was the second wife of Louis Armstrong. She was a beautiful, talented jazz musician. Of course I like the original version, but I also like that Parov Stelar has made it modern for a younger audience to enjoy.

Emerald, Camel, and Snake. Oh My!

There are many things that Lori and I agree on, but the most recent thing is this blouse. We both love the color emerald green and both look good in it. I especially like it with these camel colored trousers. The look is slouchy and easy, even a bit old-school.

I found a new book that I need in order to make my life more complete.

It is an etiquette book with the tagline, "Be a lady, not a tramp." It is supposed to be a funny little read, but full of important etiquette tips that I think are important and would like to not only embrace, but to share with my daughter as she gets older. Hopefully after reading this book I will just be affirming that I've been doing at least some of the right things. I would hate to read Very Classy only to realize that I am, in fact, a tramp. I'm pretty sure I'm safe on that point, though.
I love how Derek Blasberg, the author, talks about being a lady versus being "overly tanned alcoholic club rats." He doesn't mince words, and I like him all the more for it!
Here's the original, which was so overwhelmingly popular that he wrote the follow up, above.

If you look closely at the cover art, you'll notice that at the top there is a Lady, while at the bottom there is a tramp. I seriously love this book already. And apparently so do a lot of others, which is heartening in today's world of tabloid trash and reality t.v. star queens. Maybe there's hope for a brighter, chic-er future after all.

Maps: Home and Fashion Inspiration

This is really cute. Cover anything with a map, add a ship and I'm on board!

Maps, maps everywhere! I have always loved maps and I believe Lori has too. This season it is also a really big trend and there are some incredibly creative ways to decorate with maps. Lori didn't get that amazing explorer skirt she wanted but there are some other great options here that might help ease the disappointment. Take a look!

Here are two trends rolled into one: fake animal head made from a map image.

I love blue and green together. These shades of blue and green, inspired by the map, are so fresh.

I have always loved these dressers. They really are quite classic but are having a great moment now.

Yesterday, over on Refinery 29, they ran a piece on updating the maxi dress, which has become a wardrobe staple for a lot of ladies out there. Including me. I love donning a maxi dress when I don't feel like putting a whole lot of thought into my outfit, and my go to staple to throw on over it is a cropped jean jacket. And now that they are suggesting this over on Refinery 29, I have to say that I feel vindicated. I don't know why, but I've always been like that- if I have been wearing something or doing something for awhile and then see it in a magazine later on, or on a blog, or on t.v., I feel vindicated. I want to tell people, "Hey, I know my stuff sometimes, cause I've been doing it like that for months now." Or, "Collar necklaces are in? I've had my vintage gold collar/choker necklace for months, because when I saw it, it reminded me of Wonder Woman and I needed it so that I could channel Wonder Woman in my everyday wardrobe." I'm sure everybody does this- jumps on a trend bandwagon before it actually becomes a trend. And I know I shouldn't care if it becomes a trend, because that isn't what fashion is about, and I should be just so far above it that I simply do not care what the masses think, blah blah blah, but why lie? I like it when I am on trend. Or ahead of the trend. I like that better, because then I can puff up my chest and think man, I am good. And I can act like I know what I'm doing, but really, half the time it seems to be coincidental. I see something that I like, and I snatch it up, and then there it is, in a magazine the next month, or months later.

How often does that happen to you? Do you love it, or do you find it annoying?

Lori's Bedroom: Paint

Here is a little sneak peak at what has been going on in Lori's bedroom project. We have painted her walls a beautiful shade of grey-blue and the center portion of her ceiling (it is a tray ceiling) a gorgeous shade of teal in a super high gloss. I am usually not a fan of glossy paint but since it is on her ceiling, and it is a dark color, it needs to reflect the light. It helps it from feeling closed in or oppressive. I love the drama the ceiling adds, but the light wall color keeps the room soft. No pictures of the room yet! It will be a surprise.

I have been wanting a blue gingham shirt for a little while now; I just think they are so classic. I had a smaller gingham print in mind, but when I found this one for $2 at a thrift store, I couldn't pass it up. Today was a day of helping move furniture (Rebecca, Ty, and the kids came to pick up my dresser to stain it!!!), buying paint, and picking up around the house before getting ready to head back to the theater to get ready for the play my daughter and I are in.

I threw this outfit on right before Ty and Rebecca stopped by. (I figured pajamas would be inappropriate attire.) I was happy enough with the jeans, shirt, cardigan, and belt, but I felt like it needed a little more oomph before I headed out the door to pick up paint for my bedroom ceiling (Rebecca has a vision for my room and I am all too happy to run with it!).

I added this necklace, another thrift store find. It reminds me of the one from Two Broke Girls (a show on CBS), but kind of a more everyday version, since that one is pearls. This necklace has white beads. I seem to gravitate toward simple bead necklaces like this. I am guessing it's because I have some that were my Gram's that were passed along to me. I like that the style of this particular necklace is so formal, but the plastic-y beads give the piece a fun twist. I also added my new navy blue clutch that I found at the Goodwill for $4 for a final touch. Simple, but fun.

Valentine's Day via Doris Day

Since Valentine's Day is just around the corner I thought to myself, "self, what reminds you of Valentine's Day; since the holiday is somewhat cheesy and contrived yet sweetly nostalgic?" Well, that isn't exactly how it went but I immediately thought of all those great Doris Day movies from the 50's. I am a big fan of Doris Day. Everyone who worked with her raves about her intelligence and professionalism. She often did scenes with only one take and these scenes, unlike today, often involved slapstick physicality and long scenes of dialogue. She was a pro.
The movies she did were fluffy and light, entertaining and stylish. I think we are in a perfect moment, based on current trends, to look back to these fabulous romantic comedies for some style inspiration!

A Little Bio: I haven't done any research for this on Doris Day. I know a few things about her though: She began her career as a dancer, not a singer. She and her dance partner were lucky enough to get a contract and were to leave for Hollywood, but the night before she was in a serious car accident. She broke her leg (I believe) and the doctors told her that she would never be able to dance professionally. This was of course crushing news, but while she was bed ridden she listed to records and it became clear that a new career was ahead of her. That's right, she began singing with a band and traveled for years as the lead singer until she got her first movie role "Romance on the High Seas" (1948). It was evident that she had star quality. She wasn't a trained actress but she had a natural, fresh quality. She was called "the girl next door," but I disagree. I know what they mean by that but I don't know anyone as talented, beautiful, and stylish as Doris Day!

I love this movie. Day plays a harried mom of 3 boys, has a large dog, and is the wife of an ambitious play critic. She volunteers at her boys' school, attends her husband's boring work parties, redecorates their country house all while looking fabulous! Now that is a WORKING mother!

I know it is just a movie, but I am so inspired by the thought of a mom who always looks pulled together.

Doris Day movies are the perfect link to Valentine's Day. The movie "Down With Love" was made a few years back which captures the silly, cute qualities of the original Day/Hudson movies, filled with double entendre. I love this song at the end of the movie.....so here's to love!

I wake up, ready to start the day, coffee in hand, in a good mood. Lots to get done, but I figure I will pop onto the computer for a little bit. Haven't checked my old email account in a while; let's go see what's up over there. What is this? Missed payment from ebay? I didn't win any bids on ebay lately. Open it up, and it says the transaction for the Anna Sui for Anthropologie MAP OF THE WORLD SKIRT is over. I have missed the opportunity to purchase it; transaction closed, mark on my record, goodbye. WHAT?! First, I never officially bid on that skirt; I sent a payment suggestion to the seller, and according to the app on my phone, never heard back whether it was considered or not. Then, again on my phone, when I checked ebay, it said the auction had ended and I had NOT won. I was sad. That was a missed opportunity for a skirt that I really ~~wanted~~ needed. And now this?! That skirt was once again in my cart and then taken from me. Just like the real Anthropologie sale when the damn skirt was mine one second and then gone the next. Universe, why are you teasing me with this particular skirt? What did I do to deserve this? Sadness has pervaded my morning. My coffee now reeks of it. Thanks, ebay app for Android, for helping to keep my wardrobe from reaching its full potential.

I never thought to wear colored pants until Lori talked about them; and "why not?" I asked myself.

I think the key to wearing colored pants is to keep everything else in the outfit simple and pretty neutral. I could add a blazer and scarf , or jean jacket with boots. There are multiple ways to style these pants, so I am happy I tried them!

Chipmunk ring that I got for $5. I think it is the perfect, waiting for Spring, accessory. A bit cutesy for someone my age, but I think as long as everything else in the outfit is simple and sophisticated, it is still okay.

Let The Decorating Begin!

So, Rebecca is being an angel and acting as my own personal interior designer and helping me redecorate my bedroom. For some reason, when I moved in to this house, I managed to get all the rooms decorated (or at least semi-decorated), except for the master bedroom. The walls in there were white, unlike the rest of the house, where the previous owners experimented with wall colors like fuschia and blue-blue-blue. Not pretty shades of those colors. Horrible ones. Especially the blue. It was bad. And in the living room, it was even splattered on the ceiling. So we painted and took care of those rooms, but never got around to the master, which was, as I was saying before I so rudely interrupted myself, white, except for one wall, which was green. It wasn't the best green, but it was okay, kind of a shabby chic shade that actually matched a color in my bedspread. I was done with it, but scared to move on, and not sure where to start. Thankfully, Rebecca has been here to help me. She knows my taste (Pinterest has been a huge help here), and found me a gorgeous shade of gray for the walls. She came over one weekend and painted my room for me. I could say she helped me paint, but the more accurate way to say it is that she painted, and I tried to help and not get in her way. And now she texted me and asked if she could pick up my dresser this weekend so she and her super handy husband could take it home and stain it for me. Have I won some kind of contest here?! So my job is to pick out knobs for my soon-to-be-updated dresser. Honestly, I would really rather just let Rebecca pick, because I don't want to screw anything that she does up, but I think I can handle (ha ha) picking out some new knobs. Ultimately I want her approval on the knobs, because she can do what so many of us can't (or are at least are afraid to try to)- she can see the final project in her head. Anyway, here are some gorgeous knobs that I have found while browsing the internet for ideas. Some are possibilities, others are just pretty. We will definitely have to show off the dresser when it is complete, and before it is stained. I know I can't wait!

Kid's Rooms: AKA Another Room In The House

Since I have recently finished a few children's rooms, I am in the mood to show you some amazingly beautiful little tyke spaces. I think the perfect child's room is one that isn't ever too juvenile; kids go through phases, and what they are "into" changes rapidly. Accents are easily changed, upholstery is not. Please don't decorate for your child's interests, but absolutely consider their personality. My daughter is outgoing, so I didn't give her a demure space. I also believe that the parents are the ones that pay for everything, so why shouldn't the children's rooms match the feel of the rest of the house? I don't mean to sound domineering on this point, but mom and dad work hard to create a beautiful home and the kids' rooms are a part of the home as a whole.

Kids' rooms can, and should, be special and timeless.

Change out the accents and this room would do for a 3 year old or an 18 year old.

Admittedly this is very simple, but I love the suitcases as storage items in a small room, they almost act as furniture.

Talk about smart! This nursery is perfectly appropriate for a baby (I love the colorful modern art). Add a full size bed later and there ya go.

Love this. The colors are beautiful but the dark furniture keeps it from looking too fresh and feminine.

There is nothing overdone about this little space. It could easily be changed out later.

Kate Spade's Spring Accessories- All Aboard!

So I just wrote a post stating that I'm not quite ready for winter to be over. Well, after looking around at some of the stuff that is coming out for spring, I decided to change my mind. I still want to wear my new vintage wool sailor pants, but I also want to wear some of these other new nautical pieces that just scream spring. I see a striped shirt in navy and white and I want to show it off, not hide it under a winter coat. So all of the following goodies are from Kate Spade, and I must add them to my Need for Spring list. The more appropriate name would actually be Wishlist for Spring, since Kate Spade accessories are not exactly in my teacher's salary budget. But it is always fun to look!

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" House, and Other Seaside Inspirations

The movie "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is one of those films that haunts me for reasons other than plot: The house is its own character, like the ghostly sea Captain (Sir Rex Harrison) who is far more refined than I would imagine a real sea Captain should be, although I am not complaining. Lucy Muir (the beautiful Gene Tierney) falls in love with the house, "Gull Cottage," before she does the architect, who is also the deceased Captain. The house reminds her of the lines in the poem "The Nightingale" by John Keats: "magic casements opening on the foam of perilous seas and fairly lands forlorn." Even the musical score is hauntingly beautiful, and so the movie is pure magic. Here is a closer look at the house and a few rooms that I would consider a modern day version of this seaside treasure.

A Few Things Inspired By "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."

It will eventually go in my son, Britton's room, but for now I am
going to enjoy it over the mantle. I love all the ship paintings in the movie,
and this is as close as I will probably ever get to owning a seaside cottage.

I really love these mirrors. I know some people think they are ugly, but this is exactly the kind of piece that gives a room personality. I think it would be perfectly suited to "Gull Cottage" or my entryway.

Rooms For A Modern "Gull Cottage"

The difficult thing to mimic, in a house like this one, is the collected- over -time appeal. There is nothing "decorated" about it, so it is hard to duplicate. I think the best homes have this in common. The houses, even empty, are beautiful because the craftsmanship and quality stand alone. The collected pieces are good and sparse; they serve a function and are not only decorative. There is so much to be learned from an "honest" house.

Classic kitchen with minimal fuss. The lantern is perfect.

Simple and masculine study/sitting room. I think the captain would be comfortable here.

Corner of a breakfast room. The dark walls contrast beautifully with the white and nautical details.

This bedroom has a similar feel to the captain's: very simple, with only the necessities present.

I really like the original version of this song (by Gotye), and then recently I saw this video over on epbot.com. They are playing the song on one guitar- all five of them are playing with the same guitar. (They are the band Walk off the Earth.) It's pretty awesome. If you aren't one of the 20+ million who have already seen it, you should definitley watch the video and check it out.
Plus, how great do Sarah Blackwood's bangs look?! Now instead of always showing my hair stylist a picture of Reese Witherspoon's bangs, I can show her this style, too.

Jacqueline's Nursery

You may recall my post in December called "Faith's Room." Faith now has a baby sister, Jacqueline, and I am so proud to show you her completed nursery. The above picture was taken mid-project: we had added chair-rail and painted the walls, but nothing else. From the beginning it was important that both rooms (since they are right next to each other) relate to one another, while at the same time maintain their own unique design.

And just like Faith's room this one has an unusual color palette of coral and red. I LOVE the red crib, and so do Jacqueline's mom and dad. They were slightly hesitant at first (at least dad was) but this red does not scream or detract from the over-all peaceful feel of the room, but it does create a focal point out of the crib. The same color red was then sprinkled around the room to keep the eye traveling and keep it consistent.

This is the view of both rooms from the hallway. I love that the same cream paint is used for both rooms, they both have chair-rail and the same color value is used for the colors below the chair-rail (the medium tone on the paint chip). One room has more cool tones, the other one has warm, but both rooms have some of the same colors as accents.

The coral color in Jacqueline's room is just a lighter version of the rust tone in Faith's room. There are just a few hits of yellow and blue in Jacqueline's room that also "speak" to Faith's room. While Faith's room has an animal motif, Faith's room has birds. Both rooms have a fresh, light feel with white furniture and textiles.

The little bird hook was a TJ.Maxx find. I love hooks that are mounted in unusual places.

Just like Faith's room, Jacqueline's mom found this perfect door knob
but we still need to find a way to make it work in the existing
door. It is the perfect coral shade too.

This tall shelf unit is perfect for display, books and
necessities placed right near the change pad on the dresser
for easy access.

I found this mirror at a local antique store "The Barn"
and new it would be just perfect. It is a large scale with
girly ornate details for only $37!

I painted the mirror coral, from the left over wall paint, and I think it is my favorite thing in the room.

I love these little bird decals ordered from etsy.com. They provide a little hit
of the red to the right side of the room.

Here she is! Sweet baby Jackie in her finished room. She is an angel isn't she.

I painted the crib with a spray paint that also had a built in primer. I am very happy with the results. It made a simple piece really special. Anyone can do this!

My friend, Christine and I, gave Jackie's mom these embroidery hoops with coordinating fabric for wall art at her baby shower (Hello Baby!) and they look so cute with the wall clock mixed in.

Min (Faith and Jacqueline's mom) added the red bric-a-brac to
these white Ikea panels. They remind me of Valentine's day!
So very sweet and simple.

Min already owned the shelf and wasn't sure where to put it. We decided that it would
make the perfect spot to set a glass of water when she is sitting with the baby, instead of a table.

I can just picture big sister Faith pulling up this little stool when she wants to be with mom and
her baby sister.

I am so glad that I was allowed to be apart of this fun decorating project! Congratulations

(Some of) the Things I Need for Spring

The weather here has been really weird lately: Monday it was freezing with gale force winds; Tuesday was cold and windy,but not as bad as Monday; Wednesday morning it was freezing. Friday was a little windy, but it was a warm wind. Warm wind is better than bitter cold wind, but that doesn't stop me from hating it. It's annoying, blowing sand in your face, messing up your hair, making it difficult to wear dresses for fear of having the skirt blow up unexpectedly. You would think after living in this valley for my whole life I'd be use to it. Well, I'm not. Actually, I am. I'm just full of contradictions today. I'm used to it, but it doesn't stop me from hating it. And before you start hating me for talking excessively about wind, let me explain the reason I started complaining about it in the first place: it is making me really look forward to spring. (Yep- that's it. You should hear me teach.) In the spring, it is still windy, but it is a warm wind that blows on a warm day. None of this waking up to freezing temperatures crap and needing your wool coat one minute and a short sleeve shirt the next. Now, don't get me wrong, I actually am not ready (not just yet) for spring to be here, because I am still enjoying wearing my winter clothes. I love my boots and leggings and layers, layers, layers. And I just bought a really cool pair of vintage wool Navy sailor pants. What color you ask? They are navy blue, of course. And they are awesome. I got them at the Antique Asylum, which is the store that Rebecca talked about in her post with the yellow beads. I know I should know how to do this myself, but the pants are too short and the hem needs to be let out. I'm not good with a needle and thread, people; I safety pin buttons back on when they fall off. Which is better than my friend Heather, who said she hot glues them on when they fall off of shirts and subsequently has to put said shirts on as slip-over blouses from that point on. Anyway. Wool sailor pants that are currently residing on the floor of my closet (that's another thing, besides sewing that I just can't seem to get the hang of- putting things away) that are begging to be worn at least once this winter are really the main reason I am not ready for spring to come just yet.

But. When it does get here, I will be ready for it, with the help of these wants that are currently on my list of "Things I Need for Spring" (it is in italics because this is an important list, and important things should be italicized). Ooh, and I'll be ready for spring thanks to this really cute vintage jumpsuit (navy blue, go figure) that I got the other day. It also needs to be altered, because safety pins, even strategically place safety pins, just won't cut it on this one.

Yellow Beads

I have discovered the power of colored beads, layered with a plain metal chain, to spice up a simple outfit. I found this necklace at a really great antique store (that I didn't even know existed until Lori brought me there) called the "Antique Asylum." I know the name doesn't sound promising but it is a very well organized, large store. I will have to go back soon!

I really like the combination of navy, brown, and grey mixed neutrals with the pop of yellow; after all, grey and yellow is very on trend right now.

Vintage Grammar Prints

My brother and sister-in-law flew to California this past week for a late Christmas get together. We had a nice visit, going to Disneyland, hanging out, and exchanging Christmas gifts. My mom and sister had told me that I was going to love the gift David and Becky had bought for me, so I was looking forward to seeing what they had come up with this year. I'm turning into such a wimp in my old age, I swear, because I actually teared up when I opened it. They got me two little vintage grammar prints. I think Becky said she'd found them at an estate sale.
I am planning on doing a gallery wall in my formal living room, and I have been collecting artwork for it for a little while now. These prints will fit in perfectly. I found two more similar prints on etsy and I have already purchased them to go with my new gift. That is one of my favorite things about Christmas-- the thoughtfulness it allows us to show to each other. So thanks, Dave and Becky! I love my Christmas present!

A while back Lori had a wonderful post on nautical fashion. Since Spring is just around the corner (at least the stores think it is) I thought I would show you some of the adorable Spring 2012 fashions for little girls. I just went to Old Navy yesterday and found so many cute things for Gwenna. I was trying to be economical so I only got a few things, but I think I need to go back and get some more. Here is what I am obsessing over:

I got these darling ballet flats for her. They come in a yellow and green combo too.

This is the top I am wishing I got when I was there. It is just so sweet.

I got this cute bird top. Gwenna wore it today and it is darling on.

Layering Lace for Winter

This is another piece I've had in my closet for a very long time, but I could never quite figure out how I wanted to style it. By itself, this lace dress is really very simple and pretty. And short. I mean super short, as in it's pretty much a shirt. Or maybe it could be considered a tunic. Maybe if I were a few years younger and a few inches shorter I could wear it on its own, during the summer, with just a pair of sandals or heels. But not now. At least not if I want to avoid getting arrested for indecent exposure. No, I'm afraid this kind of "dress" is only going to work by layering the hell out of it. In this case, I figured I would try it with leggings. Gray leggings. And boots, of course, since it's winter and leggings look so good with boots. I topped the dress with this really cute sweater I got at the New Year's Day sale at Dillard's. The sweater is dark gray, fitted, and cropped, and I love it and it was a great find. See, I woke up on New Year's day and actually forgot about the Dillard's sale, which in my book is like sacrilege, dahhhhling. I've gone as soon as they open that day for the past few years, and somehow this year I did not remember about it until about 12:30. Half a day wasted! I got ready really quickly and drove to Dillard's as fast as legally safe and possible. What did I find? All of the stuff I had scouted earlier that week was gone with the wind. There was one second choice dress, which I promptly grabbed. I managed to find a couple of other things to try on, too, but it wasn't until I got to the dressing room that the shopping gods smiled on me and had mercy on me- the person who was in there before me was my size and had my initial taste in clothing and had left behind a treasure trove of clothes. Her trash was my treasure- almost everything I bought at Dillard's that day came from the leftovers in that dressing room. Why am I telling you this? Because that is where I nabbed the little gray Cremieux sweater jacket that I paired with this outfit. So there's a handy little shopping tip for you- the day of a big sale, if you don't find what you like out on the main floor, don't forget to check out the dressing rooms and don't be afraid to dig through piles of discarded clothes to find something you love. That's also where I found a gorgeous silk shirt I'd had my eye on- in a pile of clothes in another dressing room. Was it a little embarrassing sitting on the floor, sifting through a big pile of clothes? Maybe. Was it worth it to get the $130+ blouse for about $30? Yes, I'd say it was.

It's Back, Baby!

Baby's breath seems to be making a comeback! I ask you, was there ever a better name for a flower? I think it is only effective on its own, I don't use it as filler with other flowers. I am always looking for new things to put in my apothecary jars, and at $4 a bunch, baby's breath fits the bill.

I love it on the table in my sitting room, grouped together in the jars all lacy and sweet.

I can't decide if I like it better on my new dining room table though!

It is such a simple display-- not fussy, expensive or time- consuming to throw together.

Just put a little water in the bottom of the jar, stuff in the baby's breath after you cut the stems and enjoy! It couldn't be any easier and it makes me happy.

Plaid Shirtdress

After posting about the Hilfigers and their awesome Christmas party a little while back, I was inspired to use a piece of clothing that has been hanging in my closet for months with the tags still attached. I had bought the piece, a sleeveless sweater vest, after having seen similar pieces styled with various outfits. I remember back to when I tried it on- me, standing in the dressing room of Marshall's (I am a bargain shopper!), looking in the mirror and imagining all the fabulous outfits this would be part of. It was so versatile, and it was neutral enough that I could pair it with so many things! Maybe this would become a wardrobe staple, fitting in with the clothes I already had hanging in my closet, an instant update to my fall and winter wardrobe. Cozy, comfortable, and chic- the three C's I look for in my winter clothes. Once I got it home, though, I decided I didn't like it after all. What had I been thinking? This thing made me look frumpy, it looked stupid with all my stuff... it just didn't work and it needed to be taken back to the store. Cut to months later and this sweater vest is still hanging in my closet, with the tags still attached and the receipt nowhere to be found. I would pass by this thing in my closet every morning, thinking today is the day that I will take that back; I'd better hurry before it's too late and I don't get all my money back. But it never happened. I got busy, and it stayed hanging in my closet, mocking me. Not very bargain shopper-esque to leave it there, I admit, and it was looking like it was going to be a total waste of money (which I am not proud of). Thanks to the Hilfiger commercial, though, I was inspired to pair it with stuff that I already had and to wear it out. In the spirit of the commercial, I put it with a plaid shirt dress, gray leggings, cream socks, and brown boots. I think the mix is a little quirky, but sometimes I like my outfits to be a little quirky. Or ugly, as my family might sometimes say, but I prefer the word quirky to ugly. In my opinion, if you really like something, you should wear it, even if others don't always get it. I think that can be a hard thing to do sometimes, but it's good to remember to wear your clothes and not let them wear you. Wear your clothes with confidence and you can make just about anything look good. Except for M.C. Hammer pants. If you decide to sport those, you're on your own.

DIY Doily Runner

My inspiration from Pinterest.

I absolutely loved this doily runner when I saw it. Doilies are one of those little useless, dated items that are pretty but conjure up images of dusty displays of fussy arrangements. I love this modern, "granny chic" design, because it allows the beauty of a collection of doilies and their intricate details to show up. They look like a bunch of snowflakes or pinwheels!

I got these doilies from my mom, and that makes it all the more special because she made many of them. I have limited sewing skills, so let me assure you that it is a very easy project and took me only a few hours.

First, lay out the doilies in order then stack them. Stitch them together where ever they overlap and every once in a while, lay it out and take a look to make sure it is becoming what you want.

I love it!

I was watching the premiere of the new ABC family show, Jane By Design (I know, but cut me some slack- I was still on winter vacation), which is about a high school girl getting a job at a fashion house. The clothes have to be pretty fabulous so they can match the premise of the show. So while the website is touting the looks of the titular character, the outfit that I liked the best was worn by the HR assistant, Birdie. The look she wore in her first scene was high-waisted pants (I am all about high-waisted pants!) and a fitted white top with what looked like a zipper detail on the shoulder. I loved it, and now I am on the hunt for this style high-waisted pants, even if I have to get them at American Apparel. I haven't heard back from the stylists who work for the network yet (maybe because I'm not a 12 year old girl looking to find the latest lip gloss? I don't know. They shouldn't care if I am a grown up. That's ageist, dammit! ). All I know is that I like this look and I want to do a copycat version. That's my new mission. (I like to aim high.)

Lavender, Mauve and Purple

Lovely lavender: I can almost smell it just looking at this picture. It is the most striking color and it can go all the way from soft and neutral to intense, and bold. I love almost all shades and versions of this royal color.

When I look at all the tones of cream, copper, grey and teracata of this villa, I don't think any other color complements these shades better than lavender. It is so soft and unobtrusive.

This is a color that you love or you hate. I also think it is easy to do lavender wrong. Most people associate purple rooms with a version of Barney the dinosaur, and the intensely cloying purple of a tween bedroom. It is too bad because there are so many shades of lavender that are incredibly easy to live with and that are not too feminine. I think John Saladino has proven that lavender can be used in a gender neutral way. Men need to open their minds to the affect of this wonderful color, and forget the gender connotation.

Case in point: Shades of dusky lavender mix well with leather and mohair.

Even in this room with the periwinkle sofa and pillows, it is worldly and rich not gender specific at all.

This is one of my favorite rooms: Saladino uses the most beautiful shade of lavender on the sofa and chair, it is timeless and soft.

The most beautiful roses are lavender ones, they smell heavenly too. My husband knows not to give me red roses, so you can guess the color of the flowers at our wedding.

Lavender is not sweet in this room, but sophisticated.

Sarah Richardson does it again! This room is so soothing and neutral but more unexpected.

One more reason to love designer John Saladino: The man uses lavender all the time. Look at these gorgeous portiers!
The affect is that of a soft wind blowing through the space. Fresh, clean and appropriately traditional.

I would love to decorate a room based on this fabric and use it on the headboard. I especially love it because it has some blue in it.

Perfect drape fabric. It has all the colors that are in the inspiration fabric, but they are muted.

This could be chair or ottoman fabric.

DIY flower art

My crafty friend and photographer Johanna did a fun little diy project that I thought I'd share. She got the idea from pinterest (that site has SO many great ideas- I love it!!) and said it was "fun and pretty easy."

I think the pictures pretty much explain the whole thing, other than when you are done gluing the pieces on and have made your desired picture, you spray paint the whole thing. Obviously, Johanna chose white, which gives it a really pretty, cohesive, modern look, but you could paint it whatever color floats your boat. A tip from Johanna: "I recommend once applying the roll to the canvas clean the excess glue with your finger or Qtip. The spray paint shows any extra glue."

And there you have it. A super easy, fun project that can be done in a morning. This is a great way to upcycle and to create some inexpensive art for your walls.

Britton's Basketball Birthday Party

Now that my son is getting older, the huge and elaborate birthday parties I used to plan don't seem as appropriate. He knew what he wanted this year, and arranged for his Grandma to help him plan it. Really, he loves parties and planned his own. We kept it small, only around 12 kids because he and Grandma were making each child their own jersey. It really was an easy, simple party and he was thrilled.

Britton wanted to split his guests into two groups: Lakers and Celtics. Britton loves the Celtics (like his father) so he wanted to play a game at the party with Celtics vs. Lakers.

I really don't understand the love of hot cheetos, but hot cheetos he wanted and got. Yuck! Oh well, at least they were the right shade of orange.

Grandmas also made the pinata! That is right...she made it out of a blown up balloon that she then covered in layers of paper mache, then decorated with tissue paper. She is amazing!

Grandma made the cake too! I cannot believe how awesome this is. Britton's favorite player of all time is Larry Bird, so Grandma designed the jersey (made from marshmallow fondant) and the basketball (made from rice crispy treats) to look as though they are lying on a wooden floor, that is a sheet cake. I wish I had a picture of the inside of the cake, it is Celtic's green! Tasted great too.

Happy 7th birthday to my big boy Britton! Thank you so much mom (Grandma) for making this a special day.

So, vacation is over. It was a very nice three weeks, and it went by far too quickly. It is time to get back to reality. Lucky for me, I really do love my job, so even though I have loved the time off, I'm looking forward to seeing my kiddos.
I think this outfit combo, taken from Jan Gold over at Polyvore, is the perfect look for going back to work after a bit of time off. The outfit is completely classroom appropriate; it's serious enough but it is also fun. The heels aren't too high and because they are stacked, they would be easy to stand in all day. This outfit compilation was actually posted three years ago, but the look is so timeless and easy that I think it is just as fashionable today. To me, that is when it is worth it to invest in more expensive pieces of clothing--when they are classic and will stand the test of time. After all, if you subscribe to my theory, an item becomes less expensive the more you wear it. Now who could argue with that?!

The Sound of Music and Gustavian Decor

The beloved movie, The Sound of Music is not only a classic because of the lovely story, the beautiful music and on-location filming, but the amazing Von Trapp mansion which lends the perfect atmosphere of dignity and grandeur. I just love to look at the rooms in this house (it is a real house, and not a set) and I thought you might as well. Not only The Sound of Music house, but other houses decorated in the same Gustavian style.

Most people would recognize the house in this picture as the famous Sound of Music mansion. It is in fact Hellbrunner Allee in Salzburg Austria. This house is now a hotel! You can stay in the very rooms you have seen in the movie for around $180 per night.

This is the one room that looks more French than Swedish.

Gustav III, 1746-1792

If you think that Gustavian decor looks a lot like French interiors, there is a reason for that: Gustav was influenced by French design, and later by Italian and this is clearly seen in the line of the furnishings. During this period of Gustav's reign, there was a backlash against the lavish Rococo period. Swedish interiors are far more simple; there is an emphasis on light colors and this is to counteract the feeling of gloom in that part of the world.

I have to say that I LOVE this design style, the lightness of it, the simplicity. Here are a few examples of some beautiful Gustavian inspired interiors.

A New Year's Resolution I can keep.

Audrey- no one does this look better!

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions. Probably because I can't really stick to things very well. I don't put much stock into New Year's resolutions. But this year I am making one. My resolution is to wear more cigarette pants and more capris. I think both are classic and chic. I searched forever to find the perfect pair of black cigarette pants a couple of years ago and finally found some at the Ann Taylor Loft outlet store. I knew I should have bought two pairs of those pants, but instead I bought one pair and two really great coats that I still love. So now, of course, they do not have them anymore. And I wear those pants a lot. So my resolution is to find some more great cigarette pants and some more great capris in a myriad of colors, and to wear them ALL THE TIME.

While shopping for my nephew's Christmas present (a Lego Darth Vader alarm clock), Alli and I found a new book that we both wanted:

I first picked it up because I loved the look of it. (There I go again, judging books by their covers!) I read the back of the book and was intrigued. Then Alli wandered over and picked up a copy of the same book, probably for the same reason. We decided that we needed to buy ourselves a little early Christmas present.

The book is a collaboration between the Decemberists front man Colin Meloy and illustrator Carson Ellis.

The story takes place in Forest Park, which is 5,000 real acres of forest just outside of Portland, Oregon. The real world is mixed up with a fantastical one. There's a murder of crows who kidnap a little boy. I like that now kids will know that a bunch of crows is called a murder. There's a journey into the "Impassable Wilderness" to find the little boy. I'm hoping it is as good as it looks. And why shouldn't it be? The Decemberists are known for songs that tell stories, with a lot of their music based on events from history and on folklore, like the Irish tale Táin Bó Cúailnge.

If you can tell the story of the Cattle Raid of Cooley (that's the epic Irish tale from the Tain) in a song (granted, it is a long song), then think about how involved the novel should be! I'll let you know how it turns out!

Vintage Vogue Covers

If you are like me you can't get enough of the beautiful images in Vogue, especially the vintage ones. Not only are they gorgeous from a fashion standpoint but the photographs, or sketches in the very old issues, are classic. This book would be a wonderful gift and look great in any space. Flip through, and be inspired by this periodic institution of fashion and art.

I found a couple of new books that I want! The first one is called Just Being Audrey by Margaret Cardillo and Julia Denos. Both of the books are for kids, but I don't care.
The second one is called Different Like Coco by Elizabeth Matthews. This one is actually a picture book for kids, but it seems like such a sweet little biography. It's on my list.
