Summer Trend: Navajo Inspired

Like most trends, I can appreciate them but in moderation.  I believe that the various Navajo prints (possible there are some Aztec mixed in(?)) are gorgeous.  I've always liked their graphic quality but never really considered working them into my life but now is the time.  I'm remembering that in the 1920's Navajo style was hugely popular.  It makes sense that it is enjoying a resurgence.

I'm pretty exhausted right now.  It's been a very long week.  I'm really happy that today is Friday!  I will enjoy every second of this weekend.

Your Heart on Your Sleeve

Valentine's Day is long gone, but I can't seem to get over hearts.  I have to admit that in the past, I've always leaned as far away from heart shaped anything as much as possible. (Including those cheesy diamond heart necklaces that mall jewelry stores pump out around the holidays. Sorry if you're a fan, or if you have one that you cherish.  When I received one for Christmas one year, and it was talked up to be the greatest gift I would ever receive, and as something I'd always wanted, I was disappointed, to say the least.  The reason, you ask?  Not because I'm a cold-hearted bitch, but because that gift proved that this person did not know me at all, not even after 10 years.  It worked out, though- the next year, when that said person was out of my life, I traded that necklace for the Star Wars trilogy on DVD, a gift that I knew my daughter would adore.)
So.  Where was I?  Oh, yes.  Hearts.  They keep cropping up around me, and now I am perhaps old enough to realize that when done right, they can be beautiful.  Or charming, or whimsical, or adorable.  The list goes on.

Take this necklace from Shoppe by Scoutmob for example.  I love this necklace.  It is simple, but gorgeous.

And how about this simple, pretty little number?  It's a necklace, but I think I would like it even better as a bracelet.

Umm, heart map stickers?  Yes, please!  I can tell you exactly what I would do if I had these- I would hold on to them, fervently, waiting for just the right thing on which to use them, and then time would pass, slowly but surely, and they would remain untouched for years and years.  I would selfishly hoard them, and they would never leave their little glassine paper backing, but I would take pleasure in the idea that I had them, squirreled away somewhere.
What can I say?  I'm just an all-around delightful person.

Before I leave you, I will say one thing in my defense (in case this post read as a little odd, or out of character): it is crunch time at my school, with it being the end of the year and all, and I feel like I have a million and one things to get done, but not enough energy to do it all.  Oh well.  I will persevere.  Plus, it helps that it's Thursday!

Shakespeare and A Few Little Pretties

I hope you are all having a good week.  I am.  I have had the opportunity to fill in for a 7th grade honors English teacher for 7 days and I get to teach Shakespeare!  What a dream for me.  I am helping them along with Henry V.  I decided to do a big activity, so they are making comic strips in groups.  By the time they are done, all my classes with have the whole play, from Prologue to Epilogue, in comic strip form.  Ha!  

As fun as this has been, it's also been a lot of work and I am pretty tired and craving some fashion and design inspiration.  Here are the pretty things that are making me happy right now.

Sorry I Missed It: Little Golden Tales

From January through February of this year, Gallery Nucleus had an exhbibition called "Little Golden Tales," which was an art tribute to the classic Little Golden Books.  Artists were invited to either pay tribute to real Little Golden Books, or to imagine their own.

Anyway, I am really sad that I missed this little exhibit, because I think the artists just ran with the theme and the results are brilliant.  The Breaking Bad piece sold for a cool $500, so that's a little too rich for this girl's blood, but I am just content knowing that these things exist, at least in the art world.

Mother's Day Withdrawals

I had the most fantastic Mother's Day with my family yesterday!  I live close to my mom and I couldn't imagine life away from her.  We are always conspiring on projects, parties, and recipes.  Most importantly, she reassures me about parenting and balancing my life.  She is just the most gentle spirited and giving person.

My brother and sister in law usually has Mother's Day at their house.  He made us the most fantastic meal!  Not only was it health conscious (so we could splurge on dessert) it was delicious.  Salmon with quinoa and kale with white corn salad topped with alvacado lime garlic sauce.  Unbelievable.  

Like I said, I saved up for dessert which was this to-die-for tiramisu.  I'm not kidding; this was the best I've ever had.

My kids spoiled me with homemade gifts and sweet pictures.  My daughter made me laugh with a drawing of a wine bottle with a label that read "the girl who discovered wine."  My husband got me a coveted purse that I'm thrilled to have.  I am one happy mommy.

I hope you all enjoyed Mother's Day yesterday with your own moms or as moms yourselves.

Disneyland Merchandising Magic

What is it about Disneyland that makes me want to buy everything in sight like Mickey Mouse picture frames and salt and pepper shakers?  I know perfectly well that I will not want to use them once I get home, but in the Main Street shops, with the nostalgic music playing and the beautiful seduction of old timey merchandising, I forget all about practicality and I know that I need that retro- modern t shirt depicting Tomorrow Land.
We had a fabulous time at Disneyland.  This was my daughter's first experience and, while she embraced the fantasy of her visit, she was not a fan of The Haunted Mansion or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  Those are some of my favorite rides!  Oh well.  Next time.

There is no end to whimsical signage that would never be a good choice for my home.  I still want them, though.

I couldn't find an image of the particular t-shirt that I was really considering.  It had 50's retro feel with Tomorrowland images.  I just loved it but knew it would be relegated to PJ's.  How do they do it?

 I want to warn you:  As much fun as we had, there were a lot of rides that are down; Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, It's a Small World, and The Submarine Ride.  That is really sad!

Folks, I can't believe it is already Thursday!  I am happy because I get to spend the rest of this week and the next teaching Shakespeare in a 7th grade class.  I'm thrilled!
