Striped Floors

As you probably know, I am in the middle of a laundry room and powder room renovation.  You may not know that I am also planning a kitchen renovation in the near future.  My husband and I have been considering flooring options and designs and because our laundry room and powder room right off the kitchen, it is important that we consider this as well.  In my dreams I would do a dark slate floor with light grout in a herringbone pattern.  Problem is (in this case) my kitchen is huge and this choice would cost a fortune and take forever and a day to install.  What are my options then for a chic floor that doesn't cost a lot?  Well, my design idol Sarah Richardson did a kitchen recently on Sarah 101.  She used vinyl tiles to create a striped floor that I really like.  I want to continue the stripe pattern from my laundry room (since it is connected and the sight line is important) through the kitchen.

These are the three colors {polar white, fortress white, and pewter} I am going to have installed in my powder room, laundry room and kitchen.  Likey?

Now I want to know: What do you think of a striped floor?

  1. I actually love the nontraditional striped floor in your first picture with the different shades in the strips! I'm not too big on the uber thick striping...

    1. I know what you mean about the big stripes. It might be because they are such high contrast. I am choosing the thinner ones:)

  3. That's so cool! I think stripes on a floor are so much less expected than a wall and really lend a visual punch to a large room. I can't wait to see your "after" pictures!!

    1. Thank you so much, Martha. That gives me confidence, especially since it's not something that everyone would do:)
