Won't You be My Neighbor?

Desert Girls Vintage

On Friday, after returning from a field trip to the Ronald Reagan Library (where my students were amazing, I must say!), the Cat and I ran a couple of errands, which included ducking into Marshall's for a return and a quick look around.  This trip happened to be pretty productive.  Sadly, no new clothes for either myself or the Cat, but I did find a couple of prints for my bedroom (and Rebecca approves!  Hooray!), a small vial of powdery glitter (you should always have glitter in your house, right?), and a couple of books.  Oh, and some bath mats, but that's kind of boring.  Soft, fluffy, boring bath mats that were on clearance, 2 for $12.  They are the best bath mats ever, so I am a happy girl.
Anyway.  I also got a couple of books.  Oh, and some stationery.  (I did say this was a productive trip, right?)
So, the books I got were a little random.  One is a collection of quotes from one Mr. Fred Rogers, whom I love.  When my little AlliCat was little, she loved watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and I loved watching it with her.  In the aftermath of the attack on Boston, many of my friends posted a wonderful Fred Rogers' quote on facebook, which I'm sure you've seen but I'll post anyway.

I can't wait to thumb through my new book of quotes. I think it will be well worth the $2!
The other book I bought is The Cocktail: 200 Fabulous Drinks by Jane Rocca.  I had seen this book before and was drawn to it because, hello, cocktails! , but also because of the artwork in the book.
The illustrations are done by Australian artist Kat Macleod.  She works with mixed media, and really brings an added flair to the drink recipes.

Here are some more examples of her work.

These pieces, along with others, are for sale at Lamington Drive.
Maybe this weekend I'll get to test out at least one recipe from the cocktail book.  I can sip my drink while reading through some quotes by Mr. Rogers.  It'll be a really beautiful day in the neighborhood then.
Oh, and there is still time to sign up for our book swap!  This is such a fun way to connect with other bloggers, share a little something you love, and receive a little something back.
Have a great weekend!

Yellow Wallpaper

Yellow flowers have never been my favorite.  I mean, they are pretty but I like other colors better. It doesn't help that I read Kate Chopin's short story "Yellow Wallpaper" in college (if you've read it, you know that it isn't a cheery read).  BUT, then I saw Sarah Richardson's "Sarah's House" season with her farmhouse.  She uses tons of yellow in the kitchen and bathroom and I just loved it.  I guess I am a yellow convert.  For my powder room/laundry room re-do, I am painting the laundry room cabinets in a dark charcoal grey.  The flooring through both spaces is white, cream and grey stripes and the sink console is a robins egg blue.  Now, nothing goes better with blue or grey than yellow (I also love aubergine).  Here are a few inspirations:

Babies on the Brain

Hello there. Happy Thursday. This has been such a strange week; there is so much negativity out there in the world. We are constantly hearing about horrific, violent things happening. It can be easy to lose sight of the good that goes on in the world. Of the miracles that happen around us all the time. One of those miracles is on its way. Or rather, she's on her way: my very dear friend, Jaime, is due any day now. In fact, she is overdue; little baby girl Baylee was actually supposed to make an appearance last week, on the 11th, but she's still hanging tight in Mommy's tummy. So, since I have babies on the brain, I thought I'd do a post on a couple of bags I came across that I thought would make excellent diaper bags.

That first one is from Jenna Rose Handmade.  Isn't that bag gorgeous?  This company creates each piece of cloth using hand screen printing right in their own studio.   As soon as I saw that bag, it instantly reminded me of Where the Wild Things Are.  When the Cat was little, that was one of her favorite books.  We loved reading it together.  I still have it memorized and can recite it from memory.
The striped ones are both from etsy shop Mummi Quilts, and these two bags instantly reminded me of another book that we loved to read when Alli was little- Olivia.  I think this book really set the stage for her being such a good little artist.  I remember when she was little, her dad had taken her to the Getty museum, and he couldn't believe it when she pointed to a painting and said, "That's by Degas!"  She had learned it from that book, and she has liked Degas ever since.
So, anyway, I thought I'd share these lovely finds with you.  The beauty of these bags?  They aren't actually diaper bags, so they can be used by anyone!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your week. (Tomorrow is Friday!  Hooray!)

Wednesday Pinsday

Wednesday is here already?  Craziness.  Today I'm off to NASA with my daughter's pre-school class for a field trip and then I'm rushing back home to do laundry.  Can I just tell you than I am so grateful my husband hooked those machines back up for a day so we can get caught up on the piles and piles of laundry accumulating while the laundry room project inches forward!  Nothing like doing laundry in a room filled with drywall dust (if the sock touches the ground, back in the washer it goes).
Ramble, ramble...anyway!  Here are a few pretty images we recently pinned to our boards on pinterest.  Linking up again with Michelle at The Vintage Apple.

April Showers

You know what they say... April showers bring May flowers.  I'm loving these vintage umbrella pics (especially the first one, with Audrey, of course).
I was on my way home last night and the sky was dark and cloudy and tut, tut, it looked like rain.  I doubt we will actually get any rain (the wind is doing a fine job of blowing all those clouds away), but it still reminded me of wet weather that is sure to come.
I mean wet as in those spring showers, not windy, cold, snowy weather like some of you are still having.

So, do you plan on partaking in the floral trend for spring?  If I had my way, that kate spade purse (or any of the others with that pattern) would already be in my closet.  And while I love the J.Crew shorts shown above, the pair I really love are at ZARA.  In the kids' section.  I want them.  I have bought shirts from the kids' section of Zara, but I would definitely need to try on a pair of kid shorts before I tried buying them.  Maybe I'll buy them for the Cat and just live vicariously through her.
Don't forget about the book swap we are co-hosting; my thoughts behind it are
1) I love to read and discover new books,
2) I LOVE getting mail (good mail, that is!), and
3) I would love to connect with some of you out there in blogger land!
I do hope you'll consider joining us!

Outfit of the Day: Navy and Camel

Windy!! So, so windy here.  It is quite warm though, so jumpers are great--nothing can blow up but I can stay cool.  I love the look of this jumper so much because it looks like a classic blouse tucked into a nice pair of shorts.  The little collar with the tie is what sold me though.  It looks super cute with a pair of heels as well as with flats.

jumper: Forever 21
flats: Dillards
clutch: thrifted

Here is my little munchkin looking too adorable in her chevron print dress!

Thank you Kyungmoo Ryu for the photos!

dress: Old Navy (last season)
socks: target
shoes: Sperry Topsiders
cuteness: all her own:)

Please do sign up for our book swap linkup!  It's fun and easy:  you get a new book and a new friend!  What could be better?

Sweet Spot Sunday: Look What I Got!

Happy Sunday, all!  Today I thought I would link up with The Tiny Heart for Look What I Got.
The Cat and I had Tuesday off from karate, and she asked if we could go shopping.  She has a gift card that is burning a hole in her little Alice in Wonderland wallet.  So, we went to Forever21, and then she wanted to go to Wet Seal.  I haven't been to a Wet Seal in a while, but some of her little friends can fit in to their clothes, so she wanted to give it a go.  I'm glad we did, because look what I found!

Forever 21
Actually, the ring is from Forever 21 and is less than $2! The scarf was $10.80. Not too shabby!

In case you missed it yesterday, Rebecca and I are co hosting a book swap with Quick Cheap and Pretty.  You can read about the details in yesterday's post (here).  We hope you'll join us in sharing a favorite book with a fellow blogger.  We thought it would be a great way to find a new book and make a new blogger friend!
