Wednesday Pinsday: Audrey

Welcome to Wednesday Pinsday.  All my pins today center on one theme- Audrey Hepburn.  I have a whole pinterest board dedicated to this style icon.  I think she was the epitome of style and grace.

I got this giant canvas of Audrey for my daughter's room. It's from IKEA, and it is $40, but my sister spotted one in the clearance section for $20.  Score!

Vantiy Fair has an article on Audrey in their May issue.  A new book, Audrey in Rome, is set to be released on April 16.

Favorite Things: Sabrina

I stumbled across this movie poster for Audrey Hepburn's 1954 film Sabrina, and I instantly fell in love with it.  I had never seen this poster before.

I searched around a little more, and found more movie posters for the film, all of which prominently featured Audrey Hepburn.

Of course, Hepburn wasn't the only star in the film; just look at who received top billing on all three posters I've included.

I love this film.  I love this picture of the three main characters; it represents the story rather nicely, don't you think?
Rebecca and I had a small discussion one time, about Sabrina, and I remember her mentioning that it wasn't her favorite Hepburn film; Bogart's character, Linus, just seemed too old for Sabrina.  Rebecca mentioned that she liked the 1995 version, starring Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond, better.

I like them both.  I really do love the original, but I also really do love the Harrison Ford version (namely because of Harrison Ford!!).  I like Bogart as Linus, but I love Indiana Jones' take on the character too.

Rebecca thought Greg Kinnear was a little too goofy as David Larrabee, but I liked him in the role.

Both are great movies, and although I don't think I favor one over the other, I definitely wouldn't mind curling up on the couch right now and watching Han Solo quietly woo his brother's girl.

Day 29~  I am thankful that I have the ability to keep growing, changing, and learning new things, and I am really, really thankful for my smart, kind, funny, beautiful little girl who helps me grow, change, and learn each day.

Film Inspiration: Love In the Afternoon

oldfilmsgoingthreadbare
Of all the stylish Audrey Hepburn films out there, and there are some pips, my favorite is Love in the Afternoon--in terms of the fashion, not story.  I absolutely adore every outfit she wears in the picture.  All the clothes were designed by Givenchy.  Here are a few of my very favorites.

ebay
This dress has such a pretty floral print with a low-ish back that is gathered, a high neck- line (of course) and accentuated waist.
The quintessential sleeveless boat-neck.
Had I the chance to re-do my wedding, I would want to wear something like this dress Audrey wears to the opera.  Amazing.
This is my favorite because it is so timeless and simple.

How cute is this?  It is no wonder that she remains an icon.

kellyandhepburn
Here she is on set but not dressed for the role. She looks just as perfect in her comfy clothes as she does in the costumes for the movie.  Who wouldn't want this sweater even today?
I have to add here that I realize Audrey Hepburn is loved and revered by almost everyone and that fact makes me want to run the other way.  'Why?' you ask:  Maybe it is the rebel in me.  That voice that says 'it isn't original to like what everyone likes.'  In this case, though, I silence that voice because the masses are right.  Good taste deserves to be preserved.

Inspiration: Audrey Hepburn

I recently canceled my DirectTV service. (GASP!)  The receiver stopped working about a month ago.  I think it has actually been out longer than that.  I was too lazy busy to call and get it repaired.  The Cat and I have been gone a lot anyway, and when we are home, we have been turning on Netflix and watching Magnum P.I. and Parks and Recreation.  We have also been watching movies.  For the Cat, is has been titles such as The Adams Family and Girls Just Want to Have Fun.  For me, it has been some classics, like His Girl Friday, How to Steal a Million, and Charade.  Good, fun classics, the latter two starring one Ms. Audrey Hepburn, looking oh so sleek and stylish with her nod to mod and her classic 60's wardrobe.  There are a couple of looks that I particularly adore.

Hello, monochromatic chic.

Perfection in a navy jacket.

The first two are from How to Steal a Million with Peter O'Toole.  Next up are some great looks (including my favorite) from Charade with Cary Grant.

Isn't this beige coat and matching hat gorgeous?   I will answer that for you- yes; yes it is.

image via Style on Film

This is gorgeous too- beige with a black belt.  Perfect.
My favorite look from the film comes in the form of a red jacket and a leopard print hat.  I love, love, love this look, possibly because I am rather obsessed with leopard print at the moment.

I do not see myself wearing the hat, but I did recently get a red jacket.  Hmmmm.  What I would like is a leopard print coat.  Nothing garish, which is easy territory to slip into with something like this,  just perfect.  (Is that really so much to ask?!)  I am inspired by Hepburn's/Givenchy's use of the leopard print, and have loved incorporating it into my outfits via my leopard print flats.
But a coat... Well, a leopard print coat, done right, would become a wardrobe staple for me this winter.
Let me show you what I mean:

Roman Holiday

One of my favorite old movies is the tried and true Roman Holiday starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

This wasn't Audrey Hepburn's first foray into film; she had been in other pictures, but this was her first big American movie.  She had been in Gigi on Broadway (she had been discovered in Monte Carlo by the famous French author of Gigi, Colette.)  I love the story behind Roman Holiday; Hepburn wasn't the first choice for the movie, her screen test wasn't that great...  The camera man, whether by happy accident or because the director, William Wyler, instructed him to, left the camera running after Hepburn's screen test was over, and caught her in a more comfortable state.  It was because of that recording, when she didn't know that she was being filmed, that Audrey Hepburn landed her first major role.

Another behind-the-scenes aspect of the film that I love is that in the beginning, only Gregory Peck was set to receive top billing.  Audrey's name would appear on the poster, but not as the star.  It was at Gregory Peck's insistence that she be moved to the top of the poster and receive top billing too.  He later said that it wasn't due to any chivalry on his part, he just knew she was destined to be a big star and it "would be foolish any other way."

The movie, of course, was filmed on location- something almost unheard of at the time.  It's because it was actually filmed in Rome that the movie was made in black and white- there just wasn't enough money in the budget.  Had it been filmed in Hollywood on a movie lot, it probably would have been in color (and I would know what color the shoes she buys from the Italian market place actually were!)  It was also said that it was filmed on location in black and white so the location would blend in with the characters, and act as a character itself.
Anyway.  The scene above, at the Mouth of Truth, is a classic.  The legend goes that if you put your hand into the mouth of truth, if you are a liar it will get bitten off.  Gregory Peck, remembering an old Red Skelton bit, put his hand in and pretended it was being bitten off, and then pulled his hand, which was tucked into his sleeve, out of the mouth.  The great thing is that Audrey Hepburn had no idea he was planning on doing that, so her reaction in the film is genuine.
Just as he had kind words to say about Audrey Hepburn, she had kind words to say about when she met the fabulous Gregory Peck: "The beautiful, quiet, gentle hero of countless, marvelous movies.  In my  innocence, I thought he'd be just like that.  He was."

image via fashion & power
The costumer for the movie was, of course, Edith Head (later Hepburn would turn to Givenchy for her wardrobe needs).  Head was the one behind the fabulous outfit Hepburn's character wears throughout the bulk of the film.  She takes a simple skirt and button down from day to night and situation to situation with just a few smart choices.  One way she changes things up- easy- she rolls the sleeves on the classic white button down. Another way- she wears a scarf around her neck and ties it in different ways.  (Head's reason for the scarf was twofold- she needed to change the look up, and she didn't like Hepburn's collar bone.)
I am in love with the simplicity of the day outfit that Hepburn wears on her Roman Holiday, and my summer mission is to recreate it.  Most of all, I want those lace up shoes she wears.  Rebecca has a very cute pair of shoes that are really reminiscent of those from the film, but she bought them seasons ago at Ann Taylor Loft and they are (sadly) no longer available.  I've done my best to find some similar pairs on the web, and, like I said, I will be keeping my eyes open this summer for them.

Sunday Inspiration

It's Sunday...  Rebecca and I were hoping to make it to the Long Beach antique show, which we love, but alas, we were not able to make it.  Instead, I'll share a couple of finds from around the web.

Audrey

So chic... I love everything about this picture!  Her outfit, that chair, her hair.  Gorgeous.
Here are two quotes from Ms. Hepburn that show how beautiful she was- both inside and out.

I love that quote.  Not too long ago, when Alli and I were doing the play Beauty and the Beast, my friend Heather and I were talking about this very thing.  She's one of the funniest people I know, and anytime we get to hang out, we usually both end up laughing so hard that we cry.  I love that!

How can you not love this quote and the woman who said it?  Beautiful words to try to live by!  Love it!
