Inspired by Art: Sophisticated Rural

The massive online auction site invaluable.com is a great source for design inspiration.  A room inspired by a piece of their artwork is an excited idea.  I love to design but I especially love a creative challenge: I chose a piece I loved from their site and created a space around it.  Oh happy day!

Sophisticated Rural

Sophisticated Rural by rebecca-iverson
I chose a beautiful oil painting entitled Karouev/Dan Farm (auctioned October 21st here).  I had a difficult time choosing a favorite work of art because, let me tell you, there are so many.  I didn't choose this particular piece because it was expensive.  The starting bid is only $70 but what do I care, it's gorgeous and makes me happy to look at it.  Also, I knew it would be the starting point for one gorgeous room.
The first element I chose to go along with my painting is the rug.  I love that the geometric design mimics the roof-lines in the painting.  I also like the high contrast and almost quilt-like design.  The painting pre-determined that the space would involve contemporary country design elements and this rug looks a bit like a quilt.  I believe a simple blue sofa is perfect on this rug and in this space.
I next envisioned grass-cloth wallpaper that would cover the bottom portion of the wall divided by a chair rail.  Above the chair rail would be painted a soft gray-blue that would be a continuation of sky from the painting.  I love the combination of the earthy and warm grass-cloth and the soft airy blue above.  Just like the painting.
The curtain fabric is a soft tonal silk check.  I like the traditional country pattern for this space but the silk fabric is a sophisticated juxtaposition to the textural grass cloth.  Also, the soft colors help the pattern keep out of competition with the rug.
I brought in a touch of green with the beautiful lamps.  I wanted a hit of green but not too much.
The Chippendale chairs would face the couch and they reinforce the natural and casual theme but keep it up to date with their strong line.  Because the grass-cloth has multiple shades of brown I was able to use a few different wood tones:  The chairs and the side tables are different wood tones but they are both in the grass-cloth and the painting.
To finish off the space, a white branchy chandelier would hang over an ottoman or coffee table.  I like that it is light in effect and wouldn't compete with the other elements, but it is still a strong statement.

I hope you love this painting and the room it inspired as much as I do! There are so many paintings over on Invaluable.com's site available here. There are literally hundreds of fantastic pieces ranging greatly in price. Let me know what you think and be sure to go bid on this painting if you are interested.

What I Want Now: Pottery Barn

Like I said on Monday, I am ready for spring. I came across these watercolor bunny pieces at Pottery Barn and I want each one.  How sweet are these little guys?!

I am out of the classroom today and in training for the common core.  It's an all day deal, and it meant making lesson plans for a sub and canceling reading club after school with my 6th graders.  I'm sure it will be worth it, but I do hate being away from my kiddos.
Cold weather is heading our way, too (cold for California, at least), and I am not ready for the piling on of layer upon layer and heavy jackets.  I have been enjoying wearing dresses and light cardigans.
Oh well.  We need the rain!

Inspiration: Cherry Blossoms

While I doubt the cherry trees in DC are in bloom yet, here in California the weather has been in the 70's and it seems we have an early Spring.  We don't have cherry trees but we do have plum blossoms that look much like cherry flowers.  I have brought bundles of the branches in and filled vases all through my house so that I might enjoy their short-lived beauty.  Those of you who are still dealing with snow and cold weather, take heart. Spring will be everywhere very soon.

Are you ready for Spring?  I'm guessing that most of you have been ready for awhile.

Blue and White for Spring 2014

Yesterday I was lucky enough to enjoy a spa day with a group of friends.  This was a new experience for me.  Maybe I am too relaxed now because it is almost 9 am and I'm still not moving.  In my defense, I had a crummy night: both kiddos had bad dreams and ended up in bed with us and my daughter woke up with a temperature in the morning.  Well, yesterday was great.  After our spa time we shopped a bit and I was struck by all the gorgeous blue and white in the stores.  Here are a few of the fabulous things I saw.

The New General Store

I have to be honest, I didn't know the name Tricia Foley (and I should have) but I knew her rooms.  I was a big Victoria mag. reader back in the day and she styled many spaces for that magazine along with many other projects of her own.  She has authored many design books that I admire and her taste has spanned the last 20 odd years beautifully.  The rooms she has designed and sets she has created always appear fresh.
Her latest venture is an online store called The New General Store and she has curated the most beautiful collection of gifts, housewares, pantry items, and gardening supplies you have ever seen.  The style is evident: good quality meets classic design.  Tricia also has an inspiring blog, The White List.

I am a huge fan and I love these Christmas and hostess gift ideas from her online store.  I know I would love to receive anything and everything on this list; most especially the gorgeous blankets.

Please do check her out!  In fact, I'll just bet most of you out there already have and good for you.

I'll Have A *Aqua Christmas

I'm very partial to blues and especially aqua blue.  I don't think there is anything prettier than aqua and gold with lots of white or even grey.  It is reminiscent of a winter wonderland with vintage appeal.

I hope your week is ending well and that your Christmas or holiday preparations are coming along.  I am so pleased that I am down to the details with my shopping.
Snow has been forecast for this weekend!  This is such a rarity for us so we are really hoping it happens.
Cheers!

Black Friday Blues

I'm not big on Black Friday shopping.  It's not a moral dilemma but the fact that I hate fighting crowds even for fabulous deals.  I'm for online shopping on days like today.  I scooped up a few deals on Potterybarn.com,  Amazon and Etsy.com and I will probably try a few more sites this morning but then I will go take in the new movie Frozen with my kiddos.
Here are a few unique vintage goodies I found on etsy.com.  I know etsy is an odd choice on Black Friday but I love vintage gifts, especially for the person who is hard to buy for.  Oh, and it's a great place for me to get myself a little something too.

Here is part two of my little list of books.  There isn't really a theme here, other than that they are all gorgeous!
I've got to say that I am so glad that gift lists are popping up all over the place.  I know Thanksgiving hasn't even happened here in the US yet, but that doesn't mean that we can't start getting our Christmas on!
I love a good list, don't you?  I thought I'd share a few of my favorite lists so far.

Looking for the perfect gift in gold?  Head on over to Johanna's Gifting Color: Gold over on 101 Things I Love.

This collection from The Glitter Guide isn't a gift guide, but it is full of lovely gift-worthy gorgeousness.  And guess what?  It's all gold.  Hmmmm.....

Gloria from Little White Whale (the genius behind our beautiful web design) put together this gem of crafty goodness.  I want everything on this list.  Especially the cross stitch family portrait from Scarlet Pyjamas.

Here's one more gorgeous gift guide for you, this time aimed at hosts.  This one comes from Glitter Inc. and contains suggestions for gifts to give to hosts and hostesses that you actually like and appreciate, as opposed to my suggestion for the host you don't care for.

I hope your week is off to a fantastic start!

Christmas 2013 Schemes and Themes

I began this post with the intention of putting the top Christmas decorating trends of the year together.  I mean, that is the title of the post. It's funny because these "trends" really aren't trends at all; they really are classics.  All white will always be in style.  Tartan and plaid are having a huge moment but didn't your mom decorate with it at some point in your childhood?  I have a picture of my brothers and me at Christmas in red tartan outfits.  Black and gold might seem a bit of-the-moment, and it is, but it is really elegant depending on how it is executed.  Minimal and simple Christmas decorating doesn't appeal to everyone but I find that I respond more to this look than any of the others.  Of course, it looks best with lots of white.  It's so interesting to see the different styles of Christmas decorating this year and how they are mixed.
I probably should have added multi-colored and perhaps woodland [which would have easily blended with tartan], but I will leave those for another post!
