House Tour: Feels Like Spring

I was looking for a little Spring decorating inspiration when I came across photographer Tracey Ayton's blog.  She had just completed a house tour shoot with home owners' Monika and Troy Hibbs.  I think you'll agree with me that this home is fresh and happy and perky and Tracey's photos are fantastic!

Isn't that just a breath of fresh air?  There are so many things I love about this home and I will file away some of the ideas for later.  I am rarely, if ever, disappointed in a mostly white house.  You can pull in beautiful accent colors -like the Hibbs did with the peach- every season.  It takes restraint and courage to decorate this way but the results are stunning.

The Look For Less: Ceramic Deer Head

faux deer head
Recently I spied this ceramic deer head on Urban Outfitters. I've sourced other stores and have found many similar pieces, but they are all between $50 and $90. I was amazed that I was recently able to purchase one at TJ Maxx for $20.  Isn't he terribly glamorous?!
 (Please excuse my messy magazines)
I suggest you scour your local Marshals and TJ Maxx stores always, before buying accents at larger chains.  You just never know!

Christmas 2013 Schemes and Themes

I began this post with the intention of putting the top Christmas decorating trends of the year together.  I mean, that is the title of the post. It's funny because these "trends" really aren't trends at all; they really are classics.  All white will always be in style.  Tartan and plaid are having a huge moment but didn't your mom decorate with it at some point in your childhood?  I have a picture of my brothers and me at Christmas in red tartan outfits.  Black and gold might seem a bit of-the-moment, and it is, but it is really elegant depending on how it is executed.  Minimal and simple Christmas decorating doesn't appeal to everyone but I find that I respond more to this look than any of the others.  Of course, it looks best with lots of white.  It's so interesting to see the different styles of Christmas decorating this year and how they are mixed.
I probably should have added multi-colored and perhaps woodland [which would have easily blended with tartan], but I will leave those for another post!

Inspiration: Matelasse

image via myhomeideas.com
As the temperatures will soon begin to cool, I am recalling just how much I love quilting.  Especially white matelasse.  You know I love white but when it is cold out, texture is required to make white appear more cozy.  Quilting is classic and fresh all at once.

For The Love of White

"For me, people are color, flowers are color, food is color, and all of this is my canvas."~
 Rosy Strazzeri-Fridman

Ah, white.  I have and always will be in love with white.  I am not alone in my infatuation.  Many people see how magical white is.  Just like a snowy white landscape, expansive and glorious. Nothing is prettier than a white interior.  It is perfect for any style home: from traditional historic, or simple country to modern contemporary. Although it is beautiful, white interiors can be tricky; that is why some people are afraid to decorate their own homes in white.  Each piece in a room takes on more importance when everything is white: the architecture is more noticeable, and the light plays freely from edge to corner.  Mirror and glass sparkle more in a white space and your home becomes your canvas.

Fabulous, contemporary white kitchen.
The beauty of the materials and view can be the stars in an all white room like this.
This is what I would dream of seeing first thing in the morning.

This room will go out of style when? Oh, that's right...never!

the advantage of an all white or neutral space is that even a little color makes an impact.

White isn't just for pretty rooms in magazines.  I live with white in my own home and find that it isn't difficult, even with children (and a husband).  Slipcovers and duvets are genius, and like I always say, if it is dirty I want to know about it! White never bores me, and I have decorating ADD.  The more you read about others who live in white spaces, the more it is obvious that white is just right.
