What I Want: J Crew Kids

I saw this sweatshirt over on the blog House of Mia, being modeled by the adorable little Miss Mia herself.  Unfortunately the larger sizes of this kids' shirt is sold out online, so I can't order one for me.  Boo.

Looks like I need to find myself a Crewcuts brick and mortar, stat.  Personally, I think the sweatshirt, as pictured, doesn't look all that great online, but in person it is adorable, as proven in the House of Mia photo shoot.  It is fantastic, and I am not ashamed to say I am jealous inspired by a fashionable little kiddo.

Babiekins

It is no secret that I adore clothes.  So does Rebecca.  That is a large part of why we started this blog.  We both always have our eyes out for new and interesting looks to fall in love with.  Not just for ourselves, though, for our children, too.  We both believe that fashion can, should, and does extend to the younger set.  So does Babiekins Magazine.  Their tag line is "For the trendsetting child."  How perfect is that?!  I remember about a year, two years ago maybe, when Lucky magazine announced that they were releasing a magazine for kids' fashion.  Both the Cat and I were super excited, and when the first issue came out, it did not disappoint.  The subsequent issue (issues?) just weren't the same, however.  They didn't continue on in the vein that the premier issue had; they didn't even continue a to-be-continued story from the first magazine.  The Cat and I were both sad about that.
But.  Babiekins magazine fills the void that Lucky Kids left. 

Issue 1 came out in Spring of 2010. 

One look, three ways?  How very grown up magazine of  you, Babiekins.

Fashion for Kids: Get thee to the Gap

The Cat and I went to see Mary Poppins this past weekend, and then we headed on over to Third Street Promenade for some shopping.   We stopped in at the Gap, where I immediately fell in love with this PERFECT cardigan (damn it, it is sold out in my size online).

But. We weren't there for me; we were there for the Cat. And a good thing, too, because Gap has got some great pieces for fall (for grownups and kids alike!). We headed downstairs to the children's section, turned the corner, and were greeted with a treasure trove of fabulosity. Pint sized fabulosity. Some really great pieces that will allow my daughter to dress stylishly. As in our preferred form of style. As in classic and chic. Because what young girl shouldn't be able to dress in such a way that is both classic and chic, and yet still says, "I'm a kid"?! I don't think kids need to wear shirts covered in big headed girls speaking in other languages (although those can be cute too), or emblazoned with sparkly/glittery fruit or happy faces. That is fine for some, but the Cat prefers glam over glitter (though she and I both know glitter definitely has its own special place). So, anyway, without further ado, here are some of our favorite offerings from the Gap.

there is nothing wrong with extending that trend to a younger generation!

I am so excited about these finds! The coat cost all of $3 at a local Goodwill, once I had it dry cleaned it cost $9 total. It is hard to see, but it has a metallic orange thread running through the plaid as well as a turquoise accent and lining--color of the season too!  The shoes are in perfect condition and were $5, I know I will wear them all the time.  The belt is leather and I like that it is skinny and gives the coat shape.  The whole outfit cost $20.  

Cropped and Casual for Kids

For today's post, I thought it would be fun to piggyback off of Rebecca's Cropped and Casual piece from the other day to show how we can translate great contemporary adult looks into fashion for kids.  My daughter is 10 years old, and she loves fashion.  She likes fashion for grown ups, and she has almost always picked out her own clothes.  I allow this because she has always had a strong sense of style (not necessarily style that I always agree with!), and I enjoy encouraging her individuality.  The sad thing about a lot of kids' clothing today is that the adult twist they give is often (in my opinion) inappropriate for kids.  I don't think little girls need to be wearing revealing clothing or skimpy cuts, which I find too much of while shopping for my little AlliCat.  I think there is a way to let kids dress fashionably without dressing them like they are getting ready to go clubbing.

In these photos, Alli is taking on the cropped and casual trend that is so fantastic for an instant, pulled together look.  We paired her navy jacket with a cute floral tank and skinny jeans.  The look doesn't scream adult, but it doesn't scream kid either.  I think she still looks like a kid, just a well dressed kid!
