Freaky Find Friday

via filmofilia
In theaters October 5th
Halloween is coming and I am one of those who is actually excited to see this new Tim Burton flick, Frankenweenie.  I don't know why I am attracted to the macombre, the dark, the humorously morose but I am.
On the other hand I don't think I want a version of taxidermied canine decor in my home.  I dropped into a local Salvation Army and I was struck by this little pup on the shelf: his punched in nose and hypnotic eyes along with numerous stitches (I don't think they are visible in the pictures) caused me to wonder just what sort of customer might buy this little pooch.  Then I thought of the movie Frankenweenie and for a moment I was terrified by the thought that this dog might be an attempt at...well...you get the picture.  Whatever the intent, it failed.
There was another one of these (if you can image) but I got self-conscious taking pictures of these stitched up doggies.  I need to go back.  I can't deprive you all of such a fabulously freaky find.
Cheers--It's Friday!

Freaky Find Friday

Rebecca and I have both been pretty busy lately, what with trips and conferences and school starting back up again, so we have been keeping in touch primarily via text.  A few days ago (before we got to meet for coffee), she texted me an idea she'd had for a reoccurring piece for the blog: Freaky Finds Friday.  Or Friday Freaky Finds.  Or something like that.  This is the inaugural post, so to speak.  Every Friday, we will be bringing you weird things we have spotted while thrifting, antiquing, shopping, or surfing the web.  You are so lucky.  You can thank us later.

So here goes.  I found this little beauty during a quick trip to the local Salvation Army.  She was just hanging out on a shelf, waiting to gussy up some lucky shopper's home.

How do you like them apples?  I think this little lady may have been playing the piano at one point.  Maybe.  I can't think of another reason why she would be crouched down like that, can you?  I love the one green sock/stocking just starting to fold down.  This must be toward the end of a long day playing the piano.  Or maybe she is doing the limbo.
And how about the expression on her face?!

At first glance, she looks like a happy camper; she's all smiles.  But if you look closely, you start to notice the almost sinister look in her eyes.  She looks a little angry, like she's about to yell at you.  Or maybe that's just me.  Look into her eyes and tell me she doesn't look like she's going to come to life and devour your soul.  Again, maybe that's the excess amounts of Doctor Who the Cat and I have been watching lately.
Either way, I hope you enjoy our first official "Freaky Friday Find," and I hope you have a great weekend!

Thrifted: Lamps

So, these are the lamps that I picked up at the Salvation Army the other day for $25.  Kind of hideous, right?  Only one of them had a lamp shade, but you should have seen it.  Kind of like a damask, and really tiny, considering how huge the lamps actually are- they are good size.  Good scale, Rebecca would probably say, since she knows all about this kind of stuff.  Even though the lamps are a little ugly, I was still drawn to them.  That happens sometimes, especially with things like clothes.  I don't mind a little ugly; in fact, I like it.  I thought the lamps were interesting, the price was right, and I loved that there were two of them.  Initially, I thought that they'd be awesome painted a teal color.  Rebecca suggested teal or white, and we went with white.

It kind of looks like a gourd, no?

Here are the two of them, taped off and ready to be painted.
It is absolutely amazing what paint can do for you.  You hear it all the time, that a coat of paint can work miracles, and I think these lamps prove that sentiment to be true.  I bought white gloss primer and spray paint in one, loaded them up in my car, and brought them over to Rebecca.  She had them taped and painted in no time!  Really, it was probably less than an hour because she is such a pro at painting.

Look how fantastic these lamps are now!  The lattice work on the sides really pop with the coat of paint.  Now all that we need to find are the perfect lamp shades, and they will be ready to be put into my room.  It is definitely coming along!
