Pastel Christmas

This year I've been seeing a lot of lovely Christmas decor staring soft, shiny pastels.  They have a girly, retro vibe that I just love.  I don't think the boys in my house would go for it but I can admire it anyway and perhaps talk someone else into giving this beautiful look a try.

Isn't that enchanting?
Today, I'm off to help set up for a birthday party for an adorable three year old girl.  This weekend we are taking the kids to see A Christmas Carol play at the local theatre company.  It should be a wonderful weekend.

Thanksgiving Through Christmas Decorating

//

(Start with the mantle decor and add the pretty basket with gifts later)
While life is pretty busy for all of us this time of year and we all want shortcuts, we don't want it to look as though we have taken shortcuts.  Since Thanksgiving and Christmas are so close, why not start decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving?  Now, I think there are a few tricks to this so that it looks appropriate:  Lot's of greens and candles to begin with (perhaps with a few pumpkins) and after Thanksgiving you can add all the tree decorations and pretty sparkly elements or just keep it simple and natural.  Also, pine cones are the perfect accent for fall to winter decorating.  Here are a few images that inspire me to get started but help my efforts last long after the turkey and stuffing are devoured.

I love this image and it is appropriate for Thanksgiving all the way through the New Year.  Maybe accent with sparkly lights in the garland or leave it simple.

Candles are always festive.  Just add mini white pumpkins for Thanksgiving.

These moss stars are lovely and could work for Thanksgiving through the New Year as well.

Start with pumpkins and then add the trees after Thanksgiving.  It just doesn't get any easier or more beautiful.

For me, this is the perfect, everyday dining environment during the holidays.  It could easily be dressed up for a special gathering.

Here is the perfect Thanksgiving or Christmas hostess gift.  Why didn't I think of this?

Fresh greens or really good imitation garlands are the key to pulling off these looks.  They are inviting and simple and beautiful.
Happy Decorating!

Pretty Spring Baskets

My brilliant mom decided to take her hoard of useful (yet unattractive) baskets and paint them in a scheme of pinks.  She also painted the inside of them gold.  I love how they turned out and they will be a perfect little collection of baskets to use for display or to gift.

Aren't they sweet?  Just in time for Easter.
Since this is our last post before Easter, let me take this opportunity to say happy Good Friday and have a beautiful Easter day on Sunday!
With much love to you,

Valentine's Day: Planning

I think Valentine's day is fun but I'm not all about over-the-top romantic (expensive) tokens of love.  I mean, I would totally accept the diamonds but I think it should be about sweet gestures.  It really is more about my kids than my husband and myself these days.  We have an anniversary for all of that, after all.  I always do a big breakfast for them and there are a couple of extra goodies but I did find a few things that I might have to include this year.

I love this idea.  I know it is more commonly used for weddings but I think it would be cute on the mantel with fresh flowers.  One with my husband and my initials and another with the kids initials.  I'm thinking I could make these myself too.

There is an obvious theme this year:  I do love this spoon.  Maybe done as a coffee spoon set?
Cherry-Almond Vanilla Cupcakes
I am definitely making these cherry almond vanilla cupcakes this year!  Doesn't that sound amazing?
heart shaped macarons w/ raspberries
I think we might just need a few of these macaron sandwich cookies as well.  It looks like a healthy breakfast, I mean, it has berries in it.
Gold dipped milk bottles.
More pretty vases so I can buy myself more flowers to fill them.  That's right, Valentine's day is a great excuse to get more flowers.

This is the perfect, cheeky and sweet card for my valentine.

I know it's early, but are you planning anything for your family or significant other for Valentine's day?

Merry & Bright: A Kate Spade Inspired Christmas Party

The other day I was bumping around the internet when I spied this fabulous Kate Spade inspired Christmas party over at stylemepretty.com/living.  I've got to say that I don't know one girl who wouldn't want to be on the guest list for this snazzy little affair.  I am inspired.  Wouldn't this also be the perfect bridal shower, new year party or birthday theme?
Are you throwing a holiday party?  What do you think: would you attempt something like this?  Cheers!

Inspiration: Festive Mantels

If you are lucky enough to have a mantel then you probably give some thought to how you dress it for Christmas (if you celebrate).  I am a fan of simple mantels that support whatever color scheme and feel you have established with your tree and the rest of your house.  Besides your tree, the mantel is the most important focal point in your home around the holidays; here are a few of my favorite mantels this season for some hearth inspiration.

This mantel is already decorative enough and all this mantel needed was a bit of sparkle with touches of silver and mercury glass.

This natural pomegranate, berry and mini tree mantel conjures classic Christmas scenes famous in literature like Little Women and The Christmas Carol.  It's simple and honest and warm.

How lovely is this sparkly white and gold mantel?  It is very romantic but not overdone.

My favorite mantels include narcissus in pretty pots.  I also love the idea of displaying cherished Christmas ephemera.

I love that the garland goes all the way to the ceiling.

The best Mantels accentuate the architecture.  I like how this idea plays up the height.
As you can see, the best holiday mantels are the simplest but most thoughtfully executed.

If you have a mantel, how do you dress it for the holidays?

Thanksgiving Wishes

I thought I'd pop in just for a minute today to wish all my fellow Thankgsgivians a very Happy Thanksgving.  For those of you who have been there, done that, or don't do it at all, I hope you have a very happy Thursday.
The Cat and I will be spending the day with family at my parents' house.  My Mom does all the cooking.  I've tried bringing stuff in the past, but have found that it was rather pointless, especially after this evening when my Mom was giving me some eggs and apples (not as random as you may think) and then saying something along the lines of, "You're not planning on making any of this food for tomorrow, are you?"
Do you detect a little of a grrrrr there?  But, whatever- it's her show.  And she knows how to run it and execute it to perfection.
The eggs, coincidentally, are for this recipe from Ella Claire for a quick breakfast for some out of town guests who are staying at my house.
The apples are going to become delicious cinnamon apples, but I will make those later and not for tomorrow.

Also, on behalf of Rebecca and myself, I'd like to take a moment to thank you for checking out our little old blog; Desert Girls Vintage has come to mean quite a lot to both of us, and we both love the fact that blogging has opened the door to some wonderful new friendships.  Thank you!
