Chic Chartreuse

combo DR/ Library love the Chippendale chairs in chartreuse
/whitehaveninteriors.blogspot.com
I got the memo that marsala is the new Pantone color of the year but I was really hoping for a color like chartreuse.  While I don't tend to like walls painted in dominating hues like this, I do love it as an accent.  Nothing could be happier or chicer as we head into spring and summer no matter what your design style may be.
Bronze-lacquered walls set off chartreuse taffeta curtains in the dining room.
the HUNTED INTERIOR what seem's to be the random chartreuse door, it totally makes this area pop!
beautiful color, but I would NEVER be able to deal with teal walls gotta have beautiful white walls...color of whipped cream with all the color as accents in the room.

Love the chairs, chandelier, painted inside of shelving, and pops of color with pillows and artwork. Fixture similar to Robert Abbey Rico chandelier or Ralph Lauren Roark chandelier.
Gray wall color, chartreuse drapes and hot pink chairs...my 3 favorite colors!
As you can see, you don't need to overdose on a color as strong as this one to get major impact.  I want to add a few shots of chartreuse to my bedroom to freshen it up and I'm loving the bath towels as well.
It's Thursday and I am in my first week back in my teaching credential program and my kids have both started basketball practice.  It seems we don't have a minute to call our own for the moment but who has?  A pretty home is always welcoming when life is hectic, so keep it pretty everyone!

Inspired by Art: Sophisticated Rural

The massive online auction site invaluable.com is a great source for design inspiration.  A room inspired by a piece of their artwork is an excited idea.  I love to design but I especially love a creative challenge: I chose a piece I loved from their site and created a space around it.  Oh happy day!

Sophisticated Rural

Sophisticated Rural by rebecca-iverson
I chose a beautiful oil painting entitled Karouev/Dan Farm (auctioned October 21st here).  I had a difficult time choosing a favorite work of art because, let me tell you, there are so many.  I didn't choose this particular piece because it was expensive.  The starting bid is only $70 but what do I care, it's gorgeous and makes me happy to look at it.  Also, I knew it would be the starting point for one gorgeous room.
The first element I chose to go along with my painting is the rug.  I love that the geometric design mimics the roof-lines in the painting.  I also like the high contrast and almost quilt-like design.  The painting pre-determined that the space would involve contemporary country design elements and this rug looks a bit like a quilt.  I believe a simple blue sofa is perfect on this rug and in this space.
I next envisioned grass-cloth wallpaper that would cover the bottom portion of the wall divided by a chair rail.  Above the chair rail would be painted a soft gray-blue that would be a continuation of sky from the painting.  I love the combination of the earthy and warm grass-cloth and the soft airy blue above.  Just like the painting.
The curtain fabric is a soft tonal silk check.  I like the traditional country pattern for this space but the silk fabric is a sophisticated juxtaposition to the textural grass cloth.  Also, the soft colors help the pattern keep out of competition with the rug.
I brought in a touch of green with the beautiful lamps.  I wanted a hit of green but not too much.
The Chippendale chairs would face the couch and they reinforce the natural and casual theme but keep it up to date with their strong line.  Because the grass-cloth has multiple shades of brown I was able to use a few different wood tones:  The chairs and the side tables are different wood tones but they are both in the grass-cloth and the painting.
To finish off the space, a white branchy chandelier would hang over an ottoman or coffee table.  I like that it is light in effect and wouldn't compete with the other elements, but it is still a strong statement.

I hope you love this painting and the room it inspired as much as I do! There are so many paintings over on Invaluable.com's site available here. There are literally hundreds of fantastic pieces ranging greatly in price. Let me know what you think and be sure to go bid on this painting if you are interested.

Vacation at Home

Everywhere I turn I see these gorgeous retro tropical spaces that have me itching for summer and vacation!  Everything from palm beach glam to island casual is represented and I'm sold.  Wouldn't it be fun to live like you're on holiday all year round?  I think it's an incredibly light-hearted way to live.  There are few brave individuals who would actually do this so three cheers for them!

What I'm Loving Now: Abstract Floral Paintings

Painting and artwork, like rugs, can be the inspiration for the color palette for a whole room scheme.  I have lately been considering an abstract floral for my living room.  I love that it is a fun take on a traditional floral still life.  These take the overly feminine aspect out of the floral motif.

Today I am going back to a store to buy a pair of shoes I should have bought when I saw them a few days ago.  I hope they are still there because they are the perfect nude flat by Cole Haan!  Wish me luck...

American Country/Cottage Home Design

Some day I would love to design and build a home.  I have always been inspired by movies from the 1930's through the 1950's that feature American cottage style houses.  Films like: "A Christmas In Connecticut," "Holiday Inn," "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer," "Mrs. Minniver," "Remember the Night," "Bringing Up Baby," all feature this style of home.  I love them so much, not because they are stylish (because they really aren't) but because they are homey and warm and everything a family home should be.  They have tons of mill- work and stone features, plank floors, fireplaces and tons of nooks and angles.  We just don't see homes like this here on the west coast.

This is an image of the set from "Holiday Inn."  Can't you just image it with different furniture and decor?  I love this house.

In the movie "Bringing up Baby," the same set as "A Christmas in Connecticut" was used but there are many different elements.  I love this outdoor view of many of the details.

Even in the bedroom there is a stone facade and tongue-and-grove boards.

I think it would be easy to have a rustic-traditional American cottage style home integrate into a modern life-style.  There is a sparser take on decor because the home itself is enough in terms of detail and interest.

There is nothing trendy here.  It is honest and lasting.

This room is a great example of how the sprawling concept of these homes fit into a modern aesthetic even though the style is rooted in the past.

Detail in mill-work and then add more.  Keep it light and there you have it.

A girl can dream. Do you share in my infatuation for this style of home?

What I Want Now: Pottery Barn

Like I said on Monday, I am ready for spring. I came across these watercolor bunny pieces at Pottery Barn and I want each one.  How sweet are these little guys?!

I am out of the classroom today and in training for the common core.  It's an all day deal, and it meant making lesson plans for a sub and canceling reading club after school with my 6th graders.  I'm sure it will be worth it, but I do hate being away from my kiddos.
Cold weather is heading our way, too (cold for California, at least), and I am not ready for the piling on of layer upon layer and heavy jackets.  I have been enjoying wearing dresses and light cardigans.
Oh well.  We need the rain!

Inspiration: Cherry Blossoms

While I doubt the cherry trees in DC are in bloom yet, here in California the weather has been in the 70's and it seems we have an early Spring.  We don't have cherry trees but we do have plum blossoms that look much like cherry flowers.  I have brought bundles of the branches in and filled vases all through my house so that I might enjoy their short-lived beauty.  Those of you who are still dealing with snow and cold weather, take heart. Spring will be everywhere very soon.

Are you ready for Spring?  I'm guessing that most of you have been ready for awhile.
