This book is on my list of must reads.
The movie version of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is one of my favorites. It is a beautiful portrayal of a young girl's life growing up in poverty with an alcoholic father (whom she loves) and a seemingly hard mother who is desperately striving to keep bread in her childrens' mouths. Little Francie Noland's only desire is to be educated, to "know everything in the world." I understand her desire. She is like a tree growing in the concrete. It finds a way. This is the main metaphor of the book and movie.
